In my second reflection entry, I will discuss about my experience being educate as a balanced student. This entry seems to be related with SDG number 4, which is quality education. Good education is meant to teach and nurture a student to be well-educated with every skills. Some parents think that academic is sufficient enough to be a successful and useful person. In educating children, there are various types of aspects to be taken care of.
Back then in my secondary school, my respective teacher, Teacher Lela, loves to emphasize us about sharpening our skills to make us shine. There are a lot of genius and smart students but its hard to be the one and only student with magnificent skill. In order to implement that dreams, we planned a visit and hold a program named 'Let's Learn and Play' in one of 'orang asli' schools in Perak. Our class, 3 Al-Farabi, which consist of 40 students, divided ourselves for 10 groups. This group is divided to set up a checkpoint for the explorace. Each group has to come up with a game that helps students to learn and simultaneously enjoy their day.
I still can remember vividly our preparation to make the learning way is fun. We blew the balloons and filled in some letters and flours in order to attract this primary school students to learn on something. We sharpened our English language as we have to communicate with them in English. I am definitely sure it was a big challenge as we were not that fluent in English. Sometimes, 'orang asli' style of speaking is differ from the others. So, we aimed to approach the students to communicate well with them throughout the programme.
On the day of the programme, we began with light exercise which excite the students until they were eagerly to communicate with us. Each one of us learn how to manage the students and how to attract the students to focus on us. It has been a priceless experience as we are the one who lead and conduct the programme. Then, we have to schedule the movement of the students from one checkpoint to another checkpoint. The process ran smoothly without any collision with any group. Handling students in the age of eight to ten years old is not an easy task. But, we managed to do it with the help of the teachers. There were students running everywhere and crying in the middle of the explorace. We learn how to cope with this situation silently. Distributing food and drinks to the students should also have a plan or we could not handle the students. But, suprisingly, the students were in a line and were following our instructions.
In a nutshell, I think it is a priceless experience that I would not get anywhere else. I am so grateful that our teachers had given us the opportunity to manage such a big programme handling 70 students with the age from 8 to 10 years old. Quality education that we get from our teachers is the best quality ever. Not only we are taught to get good grades and flying colours results in the examination. but we also have some values in ourselves. The leadership value, volunteerism, bravery and good communication skills are another powerful knowledge that we got from our school. In this era, the students with the values mentioned have bigger chance to contribute to the country as they learned how to communicate with people politely and manage a big programme smoothly. This is what a quality education has nurture in our students. We did not want to produce bookworm students but have zero knowledge about communication skills.
Malaysia needs more students who are good in academic and also filled with extraordinary skills to work with people easily. Not to mention, from this visit to 'orang asli' school, we got to improve our English language in communication. That is why students must strike while the iron is still hot, we have to join a lot of programme to gain new experience in our life. These experiences will help a lot in our future as a leader have to lead other people and have to be brave to carry the responsibility.
